About this business
Step into England’s past with a visit to the remains of this impressive medieval Priory.
Much Wenlock has been a market town for over 700 years and has a history that stretches back much further. The impressive yet tranquil remains of the Priory stand in a picturesque setting on the fringe of Much Wenlock.
An Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded here in about 680 AD by King Merewalh of Mercia, whose abbess daughter was hailed as a saint. Remains of this medieval Priory survive today, reflecting the Cluniac love of elaborate decoration where parts of the great 13th Century church still stand high.
