About Sir Rowland Hill

Postal reformer, educator and social reformer, born in Kidderminster.

Sir Rowland Hill, KCB, FRS was an English teacher, inventor and social reformer. He campaigned for a comprehensive reform of the postal system, based on the concept of Uniform Penny Post. His solution of pre-payment, which facilitated the safe, speedy and affordable transfer of letters, created the foundation of the modern postal service and was subsequently adopted throughout the world.

Sir Rowland became a national celebrity in the Victorian era and is commemorated with a blue plaque at 1 Orme Square, London where he was living when the world’s first official postage stamp was released.
