Best places to see autumn colours in the Severn Valley

Autumn is one of the most magical times to explore the Severn Valley.

So, soak in sweeping countryside views, wander down paths and take photos whilst you’re there. Here are some of the best spots to experience the season’s spectacular show. We’ve also recommended some quality spots to stop for coffee and something to eat, as we all know that is just as important at this time of year!

River Severn walk: Bewdley to Arley

Few sights capture autumn’s beauty better than the River Severn winding through golden woodland. The Bewdley River and Rail Circular Walk takes you from Bewdley to Arley (4 miles), riverside paths offer ever-changing views of the trees mirrored in the calm water. Take a break at one of the riverside cafés in Bewdley to enjoy the season’s colours with a cup of something warm.

Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal from Stourport Basins

This historic canal offers tranquil, tree-lined towpaths perfect for walking or cycling. Start in Stourport at the canal basins, a key part of its Heritage Inland Port status, and follow the path towards Kidderminster.

Arley Arboretum

Home to a stunning collection of over 300 species of trees from around the world and right next to the River Severn, its grounds explode with fiery hues in October and November. Wander the winding paths, explore the Italian Gardens, and don’t miss the dramatic views over the Severn Valley below.

Bodenham Arboretum

Nestled just outside Kidderminster, Bodenham Arboretum is a hidden gem for nature lovers including over 3,000 species of trees and shrubs. You can stop at the on-site restaurant to taste home reared meat and locally sourced, quality ingredients, which is all prepared and cooked on the premises.

Severn Valley Country Park

With its mixture of woodland and sweeping river views, Severn Valley Country Park is a must-visit in autumn. Crunch through carpets of fallen leaves on well-marked trails. The visitor centre café makes a perfect stop for a slice of cake after your walk.

Hurcott Pools and Wood

Hurcott is a serene nature reserve where autumn unfolds in quiet beauty. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with a diverse range of wildlife, so this, in combination with mirror-still pools make it a lovely place to take in autumn.
