6 Wonderful Winter Dog Walking Routes in the Severn Valley

There’s something magical about walking your dog through ancient woodlands as morning mist rises between the trees, or watching them bound joyfully across open meadows with the Severn Valley stretching out before you.

This January, as we celebrate #DogWalkingMonth, there’s no better time to explore the spectacular dog-friendly routes our region has to offer.

Here are our top picks for unforgettable dog walks.

1. Wyre Forest

Wyre Forest offers over 6,000 acres of ancient woodland to explore. The main visitor centre near Callow Hill provides excellent parking facilities and several waymarked trails suitable for all abilities.

Why your dog will love it: Dense woodland scents and plenty of interesting wildlife smells to investigate. The varied terrain keeps even the most energetic dogs entertained.

Top tip: Stick to the waymarked trails during winter months to protect sensitive woodland areas.

Distance options: 1-8 miles depending on route chosen

Facilities: Visitor centre with café and ample parking

2. Bewdley River and Rail Circular Walk

This stunning riverside route follows the River Severn, offering spectacular views and the bonus of watching heritage steam trains pass by on the Severn Valley Railway.

Why your dog will love it: Relatively flat terrain, and the excitement of trains passing overhead on the Victoria Bridge.

The route: Starting from Bewdley’s Severnside North car park, follow the riverside path north. You can turn back at any point or continue the 4 miles to Arley.

Distance: Up to 8 miles return, or shorter sections as preferred

Accessibility: Good paths throughout, though can be muddy after rain

3. Ironbridge Gorge

This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers stunning riverside walks combined with fascinating industrial history along the River Severn.

Why your dog will love it: Varied terrain from riverside paths to woodland trails, the excitement of the iconic Iron Bridge overhead, and plenty of interesting scents around the historic sites.

Suggested route: Park near the Iron Bridge and explore the riverside paths on either bank. Cross the famous bridge itself and follow woodland trails up through the gorge for spectacular views before descending back to the river.

Distance: 2-6 miles depending on route

Note: The area can be busy with tourists, particularly around the Iron Bridge itself. Some paths involve steep climbs with rewarding viewpoints.

4. Hurcott Pools and Wood

A local favourite offering peaceful woodland walks with attractive pools and diverse habitats, located just outside Kidderminster.

Perfect for: Dogs who love woodland exploration. The network of paths allows you to create walks of varying lengths next to the pools through woodland.
